Are you returning from abroad?

வெளிநாட்டிலிருந்து திரும்புவாரா  நீங்கள்?

I took this pic when one of friend retuning to India from Kualalumpur, Malaysia(வெளிநாடு , மலேசியா, கோலாலும்பூர்).

Some of thing that my area people will by while returning to India fron abroad

Some of thing that my area people will by while returning to India fron abroad

I went to Malaysia as Senior Web Designer in 2003. That was my maiden journey(முதல் பிரயாணம்) to abroad. After one month of initial work I came back to India. That time I didn’t purchased much. I just got the salary and left Malaysia in a hurry. When the second time I came back to India from Chennai I bought few thing like dresses, sweets, medicines, toys, body-spray, …etc,. One of our family friend came to receive me in Chennai airport.
I thought of traveling in evening by train but I got a call from my house that I will have to leave Chennai immediately (Later I came to realize that my wife had few relatives over in Chennai).  So I took a government bus to go to Madurai along with my family friend. From Madurai I took a bus to Ramanathapuram.

Next day afternoon we reached Ramanathapuram(இராமநாதபுரம்), and my parents and my brother were excited to see me. After a while my family friend (15 year old boy I hope) said he has to make a move. So I opened my luggage and took a t-shirt, few sweets, pens and a body-spray . I thanked him for his accompany from Chennai to Ramanathapuram. He went to his native after a few minutes. I dropped him in the Railway station.

Ramanathapuram Luggage Opening Rules

When I returned to home my mum was in great angry on me, because I broke the RLOR (Ramanathapuram Luggage Opening Rules).  Latter I realized why my mum was angry on me. In my city, if any one come from abroad, all the friends and relatives will visit that guy to chit-chat with him about his trip, work over there. Most of the peoples main motive will be the uy will be giving them small gift (this is personal opinion). Especially it’s our duty to invite our close relatives and we will have open our luggage in front of them it seam.

Let’s consider my neighborhood friend last trip to Singapore(சிங்கப்பூர்). He gave me a two sets of best pens. So before opening my luggage (after I returned from any country) I have to call my neighbor.  I started collecting the full rules and regulations in the near by small towns and villages. The data gave a amazing trend and valuable information.

Let us consider our South Indian Marriage(தென் இந்திய திருமணம்) or any other function. In the day, after the lunch (Once the function got over) a guy or two will be sitting out side the function hall with a note book. Friends and relatives will give gifts as object/things or money. They will written their Name, Address, Relationship and the amount.  For example if I attended a friends marriage and gave a 1000 Rs. as gift, they will make a note of it in their notebook. Later, in my family if we are have any function, regardless of we are inviting that guy or not he will have to come and gift that 1000 rs or more. If he gifted more than I will have consider that extra money the next function which would happen in his house in future.

Lessons learned:

What I learned from this second trip to Malaysia, I always have two luggage boxes. One box will contain the things according to my wish ad the other box contains this like sweets, dresses, powder, body-spray … refer the above picture.

The funniest part is, you might have bought things by have a friend and relatives list in your mind and what to buy for them. But if they came there asked a specific thing which was allocated by you for a different person then you will have re-arrange the gifts for the other people.

Beware Of Snake Magicians – Gurgaon Travel Tips

One fine morning in July 2006, a snake magician stopped our rickshaw. He was dressed like a saint but holding a snake in his hand. He was talking about some god’s names. As my friend started giving attention, he came near to him started asking him for five rupees. He was telling that he will touch that snake with those five rupees. So that, the money will became blessed one.

The moment my friend open the purse he saw the hundred rupees notes. So he started asking for a hundred rupee. My friend gave him a 100 rupees note. He chanted some mantras and touched the money nearer to the snake’s mouth. Suddenly, the money disappeared from his hand. He was telling that, snake eat the money. The money will directly reach a particular god.

We were not able to do anything. Both of us were running out of time that day. Once the money disappeared, the magician started walking in the opposite direction. It’s a peculiar way of cheating. So whoever comes to Gurgaon, please make a note of these incident.

Those snake magicians will be wearing dirty dresses or clean orange color dresses. They will have a sand snake or some venomous (poisonous) snake in their hand to divert our concentration.

How to travel from Chennai to Madurai if you don’t have a reserved ticket.

I booked a ticket in Chennai Express a couple of weeks back to travel from Madurai to Chennai. That time the waiting list number was 215. I thought I will definitely get the RAC (Reservation against cancellation). But when the chart got prepared I was in the waiting list category only (WL-13). So I decided to travel by bus.

All my family members thought I am going to struggle to get a direct bus to Chennai. I went to the bus stand with my uncle (Mattuthavani Bus Stand Madurai). Outside of the bus stand itself I asked few private buses.  Their ticket cost 375 to 430. But there is one problem with these buses. There were no standard starting time.

Once I had an experience with this kind of bus in Chennai Egmore area.I got the ticket around 9.00 pm and that bus started around 11.00 pm and reached Madurai next day 11.00 am. The guy who sold the ticket said “Sir, there are few seats only left in the bus.” So I bought the ticket in a hurry. But when I reached the bus I came to new very few (three or four) passenger were already boarded. Slowly I realized that reaming seats they have to fill and then only they will start the bus.

Back to our Madurai bus stand, one of the government bus driver helped us with a valuable information. He guided us to the current booking center. In that current booking center I stood in a queue  for almost fifteen minutes and I got a token for RS. 10.00, These are called Special Chennai Buses.

They Issued me the token around 6:45 pm and my seat number was 34. Within five minutes I boarded on the bus. The bus was pretty old, and they charged me Rs. 144.00 to Chennai. Most of the (99%) are normal buses. But if you are in a hurry, these buses are a nice solution to your problem.

tendercoconutIn our travel that bus stopped at three places. In the fist stopping I had two parathas for Rs 25.00 and a Thunder Coconut for Rs 10.00.  One guy went to a shop were a grandma was shouting “Each Rs 10.00”, But the moment he chose a tender coconut, she said that it was Rs 15.00. He said he don’t want than and left that place. She scolded commonly that people are earning much but not willing to spend.

In Thindivanam we got a new driver and a conductor. I  had a coffee for Rs. 6.00.  The new conductor checked the passengers number and we continued our journey.

They started exactly at 7:00 pm and reached Chennai (Thambaram) at 6:00 am. I reached my home safely and back to my regular work.

If you don’t have a reserved ticket, or an emergency trip you have to make, just go to this current booking center and get a token for Rs 10.00.

Thanks to the Madurai Transport Corporation for this wonderful initiative.
