I attended a funeral :(

I attended a funeral 😦 | நான் சென்ற ஈமச் சடங்கு 😦 …
I attended a funeral of one of our family friends. That family were very good friends of mine, and the aunty died after a heart attack. I traveled from Chennai to their native. First time in my life I got annoyed by the way the procedures were done on a funeral day. When I reached their town, it was almost 7 a.m and I took an auto to reach the place.

I went to an auto driver and told him the area I wished to reach. Immediately he asked me, “Are you going to attend an funeral of  ****** ?”. I was totally surprised and I asked him how knew my uncle’s name and how he guessed that I am here to attend that function.!!?!! He explained to me that it was because my uncle was a kind hearted and a well known person in that town and Moreover he had been his  teacher too …

Within a few minutes, he dropped me at my uncles house. When the auto turned in to the street, I noticed a Shamiana, few crying people, few talking people, few tea drinking people, two local drummers  (Thappu -சாவு தப்பு அடிப்பவர்கள் ) playing the music and two people were playing ‘sangoo’ (சங்கு) whenever a new relative visited my uncle’s house …. I got down from the auto and reached my aunty’s body and laid a rose garland. Lot of people were crying near my aunty’s body (Which was kept in a freezer).

Too many rituals, formalities, procedures,… Different people gave different suggestions about how to conduct the rituals, how and when to take the body out and when to clean the house …  After a long argument one lady (Grandma – பாட்டி) took the in-charge and started commanding my uncle’s relatives. Who has to come first to take the body out of the freezer.  We took my aunty’s body out and they asked us to keep her in a mat designed from Indian Palm Tree leaf.

My heart broke when they kept my aunty’s body out side of our house and they changed her dress to a new ones. Some old lady was shouting and asked those who do the rituals to check any other gold ornaments missing with the body. The guy who did the rituals was already in heavy duty alcohol …

I went with them to the electronic mortuary. Once we have given them the death certificate they burnt the body and gave us the ashes in a pot exactly after an hour.

As Indian tradition I sneaked out from there and reached the railway station … I decided not to attend any funeral …..
