Hand Pump – அடிகுழாய்
This is our Madurai – அட இது நம்ப மதுரை
This particular water pump attracted me when I was shopping for fruits with my wife Jebakani in Simmakkal, Madurai. She usually buys fruits from Simmakkal area because this area is famous for wholesale (The selling of goods to merchants; usually in large quantities for resale to consumers) fruit selling shops (சிம்மக்கல் பழ மண்டிகள்).
Most of the small scale business people buy these fresh fruits and sell them in different parts of Madurai. They are spotted often in front of schools. They not only sell fruits, but also some sweets which cost very less (What ever is affordable to school kids).

Handle and the out put pipe exactly facing opposite sides. This particular hand pump I personally came across in my fifth standard. We lived near the bus stand (Ramanathapuram), in a small rented house. Every morning or evening we had to pump lots of water to cook, wash, bath and etc,. … At a time, I used to carry three pots of water on my bicycle.

When I was pursuing my 8th std in Schwartz Higher Secondary School, we had fun in pumping water from one of my school teachers’ house (Mr. Pandiya Rajan who lived with us in Singarathopu, Ramanathapuram). In those days, a pot of drinking water cost 10 paise .
