மழை பெய்யும் நேரங்களில், மாடியில் இருந்து நீர் ஒரு சில இடங்களில் மற்ற இடங்களைவிட அதிகமாக நீர் விழுவதை பார்த்து இருப்பீர்கள். மழை பெய்தால் இரண்டு மூன்று தினங்களுக்கு செடிகளுக்கு தண்ணீர் விடவேண்டிய வேலை இல்லை. அது போக சாதாரண உபயோகம் போக மீதி இருக்கும் வாளிகளில் மழை நீர் பிடித்து ஓரிரு நாட்கள் சென்ற பின்பு அவற்றை உபயோகப்படுத்துவது மிகச்சிறந்த செயலாகும்.

அப்பாவிடம் பயின்ற கலைகள் – தென்னை ஓலையில் தட்டி பின்னுதல் : வேலூருக்கு அருகில் உள்ள பள்ளிகொண்டா என்ற ஊரில் நான் நான்காம் வகுப்பு வரை படித்தேன். அப்போதுதான் தட்டி பின்னும் முறையை அப்பாவிடமிருந்து கற்றுக்கொண்டேன். நேற்று முன்தினம் பெய்த மழையின்போது இரண்டு தென்னை ஓலைகள் கீழே விழுந்தன. ஞாயிற்றுகிழமை அவற்றை தட்டியாக பின்னினேன்.
